It looks like an incomplete attempt to airbrush the sky on the negative? Was the image being prepared for publication somewhere?

Bill Bartlett Bill, this shot is not your typical Lawrence capture, it is possible that it was taken on behalf of some publication or other. We do come across early efforts at photo-shopping quite often, Have a close look at the W in Waterford in this photo.
