It is a cable tram which ran on this route (King Street wharf to Ocean Street Edgecliff) between 1894 and 1905 before electrification. agreed. those are annoying. it says 1941 because it's january 1942.

if you remove your cursor from the image, the boxes will go away a second later. or just click all sizes and see it bigger, which is best. :o) this is such a great shot...
