    I always wondered (since watching Popeye cartoons) whether those "funnels" are for sucking fresh air in, or for blowing stale air out? Or for putting Popeye in?

    beachcomber australia The combustion air for the boiler furnace gets drawn down these ventilators. The products of combustion go up the funnel.

    Picture of SS Conningbeg leaving Waterford port. City is on starboard side (right in picture). Various funnels are for the ships ventilation system. Hard to believe that my grandfather Thomas who went down with this ship in December 1917 leaving a wife and NINE children, would have walked this deck. Thanks for publishing it.
