The date is scratched into the negative along the lower right side: 8/2/13 (reversed). The same date appears in the companion photo along the lower left side.

August 1913 saw the reformation of the taxi hacking industry in NYC. A new public hacking ordinance was introduced to abolish private cab stands and reduce taxi fare rates. The new ordinance went into effect at 0000hours on August 1, 1913. A new style of taximeter was also required adjusted to register the new rates of fare. This appears to be the cab in which chauffeur Pierre Clop and his female passenger, Mme. Lavolti, were killed when his taxicab fell into a hole on the Rue St. Augustin. The incident occured during a three-hour storm "of phenomenal violence" on the night of Monday, June 15, 1914. Eyewitnesses saw the hand of a woman waving from one of the windows of the cab before it was covered by an avalanche of loose earth. Fourteen people died during the storm as sections of streets collapsed in several parts of the city.

Seven thousand cab drivers attended Clop's funeral on Friday, June 19. According to the papers, "Further subsidences occur daily, the latest, 200 feet long and 10 feet wide, being in Rue Moncey."

I guess nothing changes - taxi drivers are dodgy. Public transport should have priority over cars. A taxi did a U-turn in front of a tram I was on and it was a write off.
