    beachcomber australia Thanks! No it's a 1910 map that is far more detailed with every business listed and the outlines of the buildings. It's been digitised but never put online for some reason, which is a real shame!

At the time is was amazing ... 22 months ago Google newspapers did not go far enough back for most of these photos, but I see that it does now. It is much clearer to read than Trove, and doesn't seem yo rely on that program which suffers hugely from misspellings needing correction. Worth further investigation ...

    To add to this: I can't make out the name of the one in the background. Perhaps it wasn't a hotel for long as none of the other images show this as a pub - in fact in the one above it's a bank. What this photo doesn't reveal is that the hotel on the SE corner behind the men walking (and clearly seen above) was called the Boomerang and was there since about 1869. Today its the site of the Shelbourne Hotel, built in 1902 - the same year as the new Pyrmont Bridge, which ran onto Market street, was built.

    This photo shows that the Jubilee & the Governor Bourke were demolished when the new bridge was built.

    These images all capture so well the dramatic changes on this site that happened in only a few short years.
