No. 1 Sussex Street, which is very pleasing to the eye, was an office block designed by Willliam Wardell. Wardell was also the architect of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne.

My GGG Grandfather Richard Sim had one of his many flour mills at Grafton Wharf in the 1860s. His daughter (my GG Grandmother) Louisa Maud Sim was born in Sussex Street in 1866. Her birth certificate confirms this fact. Her son (my great grandfather) stated in his diary that his mother was born in Sussex St where all the wharves were. I believe the area that was once Grafton Wharf is now Barrangaroo?

kerle61 Yes, it is the southern end of what is becoming Barangaroo. GoogleMapsStreetView - goo.gl/maps/YWkxT3idGf32 . The warehouse at left (Grafton Bond) is still there, but foreshortened to enable the extension of Sussex Street.

beachcomber australia Great, thanks beachcomber! The notes in the database say that one of the vessels in the background is a torpedo boat. I found no evidence of the vessel being used as a flagship during an Anniversary Day regatta, BUT, I did find this article! On 17 Feb 1897, a select few of the best of the New South Wales Mounted Rifles boarded the steamer bound for the Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee celebrations in London. And guess where they boarded with their horses? :-D See this great account as well. Another great find!!
