The Federation of the Commonwealth of Australia celebrations held in Sydney during 1901 saw many arches erected through the city and down Oxford Street. This is the German arch, and it was erected in Park Street. Hyde Park can be seen to the left and right of shot. The two disc shaped bas-reliefs on the columns show at left "Germania" and at right "Australia". (location ref. City of Sydney archvies - www2.photosau.com/CosSQL/scripts/ExtSearch.asp?SearchTerm... ) The central slogan which is only visible through at the persistant URL is 'EINIGKEIT-MACHT-STARK". Literally, "Agreement makes strong."

Now that we know another arch, the 'Commonwealth Arch" (shown here: www.flickr.com/photos/powerhouse_museum/3129855980/ ) was on the corner of Elizabeth Street and Park Street, and that the Commonwealth Arch arch is visible in the background of this photograph then we can say that the view shown in this photograph is looking west along Park Street.

There's a really intriguing reflection of the studio or location of where this was taken on the left side of her breastplate, It looks like a long hall or railway station.

A Celtic triune or triad is possibility perhaps, or the mythic or later empire idea of 'Britannia' holding a trident?

Added later : Even earlier than Boudicca a personification goddess like Eriu for Eire , Brigantia for Britain... a form of the Goddess Brigid .
Three rivers are named for Her - Brigit, Braint and Brent in Ireland, Wales and England, respectively. As with the Celtic river goddess of the Seine in Paris , Sequana
In modern Britain today She is shown as the warrior-maiden, Brigantia, and venerated not only as justice and authority in that country, but also as the personification of Britain as is seen on the coin of the realm. There is a story, coming from the 12th century, in which Merlin is inspired by a feminine figure who represents the sovereignty of the Land of Britain. She causes his visions to reach through British history, on, so it is said, to the end of the solar system. Taliesin also describes a traditional cosmology, inspired by Brigantia. She is central to many heroic myths, especially those concerned with underworld quests and sacred kingship. This seems to relate to Her concern for the development of human potential.

This is Commonwealth, a 10 footer built by Norman Wright Snr in Brisbane in 1906. She was sold to Sydney in 1924. She visited Sydney at least once for a National Championship in 1912, but this photo is likely to be when she raced for the Balmain Dinghy Sailing Club after 1924.
