He was one of a number of men transferred from the 28th (Reserve) Battalion, Middx Regt to the Royal Sussex Regt. Others I have seen were transferred to the Royal Sussex Regt on the 16th Dec 1916 and embarked for France the same day (which ties in with the information you have). He may have travelled overseas as part of a draft for another Sussex Regt battallion and then been posted to the 7th Bn shortly thereafter. For example, G/20222 (ex 28th Middx) embarked as part of draft for 9th Royal Sussex on 16/12/16; posted to 7th Bn on 3rd Jan 1917.

Born 1892 Peckham, London. The 1901 census records him living at 90 Pentney Road, Balham, London [the property still exists], with his father Ernest G [b.1868, Peckham d.1949] a widower who’s employment is recorded as “Chef”, and his younger brother, Walter [b. 1894 Dulwich]. His mother Ellen Mary nee Taylor had died in 1897. The 1911 census records his employment as a Pullman Car Attendant. At the time he was lodging with the Speight family at 16 St Luke’s Road, Clapham [the property still exists but has been renamed St Luke’s Avenue]. He married Amy Frampton in the third quarter of 1914 in the Steyning district of Brighton.

This was my Grandfather. I have some letters he sent from the Trenches and aslo from the nurse in the Field Hospital who cared for him in his final days. He was a Bayonet Instructor and was drafted as a machine gunner and ironically was fatally bayonetted in the stomach when his machine gun jammed in battle leaving his wife Amy, my father (Henry Ernest) at 6 months old and his older sister (Eileen) who sadly died at the age of 17 from TB. His wife Amy died in 1978 and my father passed away in 1992 after a short illness. This has left me to carry the family name forward (Charles Ernest Buckman) and on to my son (Oliver Charles Buckman) I have my Grandfathers medals and also those of his brother Walter (Uncle Wal) His son (my father) served in the second World War mainly in India attached to the Royal Army Service Corps. The Military history has continued on through his Grandaughter (Claire Eileen my sister) in her 3 sons David (Royal Navy) Adam (Coldstream Guards recently awarded the Military Cross) Christopher ( Royal Marine Commando) Before enlisting in the army and going to war he was employed on the Southern Bell Pullman Train as a very young man, I have the colour brochure from the train with his portrait in his attendants uniform.
