They were the first twin screw steamers, with long interesting histories. Her she is in her original fittings with 3 funnels in service with the Inman line. Launched in 1888 (City of NY) and 1889 (City of Paris),they each quickly won the Blue Ribband. Both were used by the US Navy as auxiliary cruisers in the Spanish-American War (as Harvard and Yale) Returned to service and renamed New York and Philadelphia for the American Line. In 1901-3 New York was refitted with 2 funnels and new triple expansion engines. Philadelphia (Yale) was stranded during the war and salvaged. She got her 2 funnels and was returned to service in 1901 as Philadelphia with the American Line. Both became troop transports and were renamed again in 1918 (as Plattsburg and Harrisburg) and both were broken up in 1923 in Genoa

American Line's SS Philadelphia arrived in New York from Liverpool on Feb. 22, 1917, particularly newsworthy in light of heightened tensions with Germany and the break in diplomatic relations: "The American liner Philadelphia, the only passenger vessel flying the American flag to risk a trip across the Atlantic since the German submarine decree became effective, arrived at her pier at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon with 243 passengers on board." The American Ship Lines had 3 sailings a week from Liverpool to Philadelphia and in the year 1882 alone, 17,342 passengers arrived from Liverpool. The line had four ships that traveled "via" Liverpool and Queenstown to Philadelphia. They were called Kensington, Southwark, Haverford and Merion. The Merion is the ship that carried our Cafferty and Boland ancestors to America. All in all, the ship brought in around 20,000 immigrants each year between 1880 and 1910 from England/Ireland.
