"Two complete United States Army field hospitals, which are to be attached to the Belgian Army, will be shipped to Europe on the American liner St. Louis today. With the hospitals will go four surgeons and twentyfour nurses. Each hospital is complete and the War Department was permitted by special act of Congress to turn them over to the Red Cross. "

PHILADELPHIA (LOC)

  • Art Siegel said:
American Line's SS Philadelphia arrived in New York from Liverpool on Feb. 22, 1917, particularly newsworthy in light of heightened tensions with Germany and the break in diplomatic relations: "The American liner Philadelphia, the only passenger vessel flying the American flag to risk a trip across the Atlantic since the German submarine decree became effective, arrived at her pier at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon with 243 passengers on board."
