Comment from reader T. Edmonds: School boys volunteered to work for the railways during the strike and were used in low skilled jobs. Many of those in the photo appear to be of school age and the chalk on the TAM sleeping car includes references to Sydney Grammar and Shore. Sleeping cars possibly being used for accommodation.

Comment from reader T. Edmonds: The soldier was Cpl Herbert Thomas Bolt (55th Infantry Battalion) who gave his occupation as brickmaking. Address on enlistment in September 1915 was Bexley, later changed to Newtown. Killed in action, 20 July 1916, Fromelles. The carnival occurred was on 23 September 1916. Bolt’s railway career was: Oct 1908 – Wool checker – Darling Harbour Mar 1909 – Dispensed with May 1914 – Cleaner – Trams Sep 1914 – Labourer – Trams Oct 1914 – Resigned Nov 1914 – Labourer – Trams Jan 1915 – Dispensed with

From the link above: "In 1865, a small bakery opened in Hunter Street, Newcastle, north of Sydney, New South Wales. It supplied bread, pies and biscuits to the local townspeople as well as to the crews of the many ships that docked at the port to load coal." AB

Comment from reader T. Edmonds: Appears to be at Carriage Works (FA type carriages in background) with food being served. Lad at window has two plates, so possibly working as a waiter. Appears to have a table behind the lad with a plate of food on it.
