Soccer team from Brisbane, ca. 1870

This photo is probably of the Brisbane FC, who played 'Victorian rules' football (now Australian rules) since their formation in 1866 (there were no known soccer clubs in Brisbane until the early 1880s) In the 1870s, all codes played with a (roughly) spherical ball - hence the soccer attribution here? Ellipsoidal balls for Australian rules and rugby came into use a little later Photographer probably Daniel Marquis

Latrobe Ladies' Football Club, 1921

Latrobe Ladies FC was Brisbane's first women's soccer club, formed in June 1921. Together with players from other new teams (Brisbane City and Brisbane Ladies) they played a North Brisbane v South Brisbane representative match on Saturday 24 September 1921, before 10,000 spectators at The Gabba (North won 2-0) This was the earliest known official women's soccer football match played in Australia

Peter Eedy Interesting history. Do you know much about women Soccer clubs? It would be great to capture this Queensland sport history. Peter you could be a guest blogger through writing a page on this history, with book references and hopefully more images from our collection to add volume to your story. If you are interested contact qldmemory@slq.qld.gov.au to sharing your story and research.

Sorry, I didn't see this post until now (only two years later!) Re local women's football - academic and football historian Lee McGowan has created this wonderful website www.withtheballatherfeet.com.au/
