The same woman:

Interesting. . . thanks for the connection b/n the Jr. Lge. and the Settlement movement--must learn more about this. Fascinating--she was essentially the Founder of the Junior League Movement as it exists today.

Thanks B-59 for locating her name. We will add it to our catalog record.

This photo ran in the Sunday (Portland) Oregonian on July 30, 1916 with the caption: "One of of the strongest organizations formed in support of Charles E. Hughes is that of the women of New York, who have raised a large fund and are carrying on active work to assist his campaign. A leading member of the organization is Mrs. Charles Cary Rumsey, a daughter of the late E. H. Harriman. As Mary Harriman she was well-known socially in New York. She inherited from her father a love of horses and was a frequent exhibitor at horse shows." oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/sn83045782/1916-07-30/ed-1/se...

Oh, so sad about the damage! It was a lovely expression captured. American reformer, feminist, and pacifist Jane Addams (1860-1935): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Addams

Luckily, this is not a Bain original, but a photograph of a photographic print by someone else, the original (or a copy) of which may survive elsewhere.
