She's either mending a dress or adding a few rows of sequins.

Who is this pretty lady? Mrs.Joe Leiter. Who is Mrs. Joe Leiter? June 10, 1909, Chicago, Mrs. Leiter's new born son died one day before Mr. and Mrs. Leiter's first annirversary of their marriage---New York Times 1909 result from Google search..June 10/my birthday...my goodness..what a coincidence! ********************************************************************** HISTORY OF THE OLD AMERICANA PHOTOS This image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection which represents one of America's earliest news picture agencies. The collection richly documents sports events, theater, celebrities, crime, strikes, disasters, political activities including the woman suffrage campaign, conventions and public celebrations. The photographs Bain produced and gathered for distribution through his news service were worldwide in their coverage, but there was a special emphasis on life in New York City. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1900s to the mid-1920s, but scattered images can be found as early as the 1860s and as late as the 1930s. memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/p?ammem/cdn:@FIELD(SUBJ+@ban... shows some pictures of Mrs. Joe Leiter (and her husband) from the Chicago Daily News. The cataloging (by the Chicago History Museum, formerly Chicago Historical Society) indicates they are from 1926.

NYT article on December 22, 1908,: LEITERS SAVING MINE.; Chicagoan and Young Wife Encouraging the Fire Fighters at Zeigler. query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9B03E6DB113EE233A... suggests she is the former Miss Juliette Williams of Washington DC. Leiter seems to have been prominent/notorious Chicago millionaire. His father was one of the co-founders of Marshall Field (the retail chain) and as a young man he made money speculating. As well as losing her first child, noted by NancyLiu@USA above, in 1921, their 10-year old son killed himself accidentally while duck-shooting.
