Here’s a selection of the conversations happening on these photos:

[Portrait of Duke Ellington, Junior Raglin, Juan Tizol, Barney Bigard, Ben Webster, Harry Carney, Rex William Stewart, and Sonny Greer, Howard Theater(?), Washington, D.C., between 1938 and 1948] (LOC)

I'm guessing this photo to be from 1942 to 1943. Ben Webster was in Duke's orchestra from '40 to '43; Junior Raglin was Jimmy Blanton's replacement (Blanton died in '42).

The saxophone looks a little unusual to me, in an otherwise classical orchestra. I presume that is the conductor centre front; who is the lady on his right - a singer?
  • National Library of Ireland on The Commons said:
beachcomber australia Maybe a singer, alright! She has sheet music rolled up, and she's the only one without an instrument...

A wild guess for the location would be Waterford City hall or the Theater Royal. Unfortunately I'm a little too far away to pop in a take a look.

Its definitely not Waterford City Hall ( The Large Room) and is not the Theatre Royal. I believe that it may be St Catherine's Hall and Sunday School in Catherine Street Waterford, aka the Protestant hall. It has been altered since the photo, but will check out location in next few days. DG

desmondg47 That would have been my second wild guess.

Wiedost (LOC)

Looks to be en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudy_Wiedoeft "Rudolph "Rudy" Cornelius Wiedoeft (January 3, 1893 - February 18, 1940) was a U.S. saxophonist." Another artist who recorded with Victor. See adp.library.ucsb.edu/index.php/talent/detail/24653/Wiedoe...
  • Anne (LOC P&P) said:
swanq: Thanks for finding information for Wiedoeft here. We will update our description with the new details.

The title should probably be updated to reflect that this is Rudy Wiedoeft, not Wiedost.
