This is Quite Interesting and Historical! When the MAGDALENE VINNEN was in Sydney the order came from the new Nazi government in Germany to use the old German Imperial flag (black, white, red horizontal bands) accompanied by the Nazi flag with swastika (not evident in any of these photos). See trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/16959672 -
CHANGE OF FLAG. The German Consul-General (Dr. Rudolph Asmis) has received an instruction that, in place of the Republican flag (which has horizontal bars of black, red, and gold), the old Imperial flag (black, white, and red) must be flown, and that on all ceremonial occasions it must be accompanied by the Nazi flag, with its swastika emblem. On the German sailing ship Magdalene Vinnen, berthed at Woolloomooloo, the Republican flag was hauled down at sunset on Wednesday, and yesterday morning in the presence of the entire ship's company, the Imperial flag was hoisted in its stead.

Seems like an unusual monastery cellar bar to have on a ship!

beachcomber australia It is unusual. The size and shape of the room really does indicate that it might have been taken on board KOLN. Interesting wall art :P

Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons That's wonderful! Love the name. At the top of Bridge Street where the NAB building is now. Mr Hall took an exterior photo from the building opposite - acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemLarge.aspx?itemID=53245
