    This is the Strathaird of 1932 or the Strathnaver (1931), P&O sisters built for the England-Australia service and on it except for WW2 duties until their scrapping in Hong Kong in 1961. Checking the bow at max resolution, it looks more like the former name!

    Just going on the scrawl on the slide, I gather this is RMS Strathnaver... I suspect this pic was taken in November 1931, when the Strathnaver made her first voyage to Australia. As you can see, over at the Harbour Bridge, construction work is still in progress on the NE pylon...the last block of granite was evidently put in place on the NE pylon on 15th January, 1932... Per the shipping intelligence, on her first voyage to Australia, the Strathnaver initially arrived in Sydney on 12th November, 1931 and was berthed at Circular Quay No. 4 wharf...she appears to have remained there until departing for Brisbane at 5pm on 14th November...she returned from Brisbane on 20th November and was initially berthed at Circular Quay No. 4 wharf...she was later moved to Pyrmont No. 20 wharf (date?)...then moved from Pymont No. 20 wharf to Circular Quay No. 4 wharf on 26th November...from where she departed for London on 27th November...so there are a number of possibilities re when this ANMM Sam Hood pic might have been taken... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/246567575 - Daily Telegraph, 13th November, 1931...there's a pic here taken the previous day which shows the Strathnaver approaching Circular Quay...I'm not sure it's the same occasion...the pennants on the spar of the forward mast aren't a match... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/224280560 - the Sun, 12th November, 1931...the Strathnaver being berthed at West Circular Quay earlier that day... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/16802095/1159563 - SMH, 13th November, 1931...the Strathnaver berthed at West Circular Quay (? the previous day)... If you're interested, there are a number of pics of the Strathnaver in the NLA's Fairfax Collection which were taken when she was in Sydney in November 1931... trove.nla.gov.au/work/186347080 - this NLA Fairfax pic shows the Strathnaver at West Circular Quay with the cranes over at the NE pylon in a similar position to what we see in the ANMM Sam Hood pic...it's difficult to tell whether it might be the same occasion...maybe earlier or later...in the NLA Fairfax pic there's no pennant flying from the spar of the forward mast... trove.nla.gov.au/work/189730689 - NLA Fairfax pic of the Strathnaver passing under the Sydney Harbour Bridge...probably taken on 26th November, 1931 when the Strathnaver was being moved from Pyrmont No. 20 wharf to Circular Quay No. 4 wharf... trove.nla.gov.au/work/183008548 - this NLA Fairfax pic shows the construction work on the NE pylon nearing completion...I suspect it was taken in ca. November- December 1931... trove.nla.gov.au/work/190080739 - just for interest...this NLA Fairfax pic shows the Strathnaver at Circular Quay during her second voyage to Australia, in February/March 1932...here the construction work at the Sydney Harbour Bridge is now complete and all the cranes have been removed...the pylons are being cleaned and you can also see the locomotives which were parked on the Harbour Bridge during the load tests. On the Strathnaver's second voyage to Australia, after arriving in Sydney she again did the Brisbane loop...she initially arrived in Sydney on 25th February, 1932...left for Brisbane on 29th February (leap year) from No. 21 wharf Jones Bay...returned to Sydney on 7th March...then departed for London from No. 4 wharf Circular Quay on 11th March...this pic appears to have been taken when she initially arrived in Sydney on 25th February, 1932...
