Odd looking ship, so I went googling. She was a "Zoo Ship" on an earlier 1927 voyage, bringing a giraffe and several hundred birds for the Sydney Zoological Gardens - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/3887538 " At 08.02 hours on 12 Jan 1942, the Yngaren was hit by two torpedoes from U-43 in heavy seas and sank within one minute about 600 miles west of Ireland " www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?12932 uboat.net/allies/merchants/1242.html

beachcomber australia Thanks Beachcomber, love the detail about YNGAREN being a 'zoo ship' - how unusual! Was hoping to find some images of the vessel's cargo in 1927 but alas not so far!

Yngaren was an early motorship with a very small funnel, hence the odd appearance. The ship was built in 1921 (only 10 years after the first commercial motorship) and was 5427 grt. The ship was owned by Red. A/B Transatlantic that maintained a regular cargo liner service from Europe to Australia.

This looks all too familiar to me........as a young Rover Scout, I was helping the Cub leaders of my scout group, 1st Wollstonecraft, on a days outing to go over the visiting tall ship Esmeralda at Circular Quay & later watched the evenings fire works from Bradleys Head to celebrate the Second Centenary celebrations of the arrival of the good Captain James Cook's discovery of the east coast of Australia.
