Wonderful SS ORIANA photos on her maiden voyage. She arrived on 30 December 1960, which should be the firm date for all these pics. See www.ssmaritime.com/build-oriana3.htm The Overseas Passenger Terminal (aka Sydney Cove Passenger Terminal) had just been opened 10 days earlier - The new terminal was opened on 20 December 1960 and 10 days later the "Oriana" on her maiden voyage berthed at the terminal. The Australian Women's Weekly of 1/12/1961 has a two-page aerial colour spread of Circular Quay and ORIANA (and the foundations of the Opera House).
Even with his foresight, Governor Phillip could not have envisaged the splendid 42,000-ton luxury liner Oriana, pride of the P. & O. -Orient Line, on its maiden voyage this month, lying beside the new passenger terminal, as shown in this magnificent aerial picture. Because the Oriana can steam sideways, she can be edged into berth without the aid of tugs. Oriana was the first ship to use the terminal, recently completed at a cost of £1,750,000.

beachcomber australia Thanks for sharing some background beachcomber. If you are in Sydney on November 25 you might like our event to welcome 5 P&O cruisers into the harbour - we're hoping to see some great photographs of this historic event.
