Those things sticking out like spines are called "Cleco" fasteners; spring-loaded clips used for holding thin sheets together while riveting.

Is this photo staged? I does not look like there is a set in the rivet gun. Also I wonder if it was common for women doing that kind of work to wear that much makeup. Dave

Whether for publicity or actual, the quintessential Rosie The Riveter, that helped put em in the air. God bless the American Women that came out of the kitchen and into the workforce when the Country needed her; couldn't have done without her.

Give the workers seem to be riveting, it is unlikely they are removing paper from the pilot's window. In fact, they probably aren't even working on the cockpit - looks more like the nose or perhaps tail section.

I agree with perfgeek they are riveting. The girl on the left is driving the rivet while the girl on the right is forming the shop head also known as bucking the rivet. I'll bet that at the end of the day these two couldn't hear anything. Dave
