Operating a hand drill at the North American Aviation, Inc., [a] woman is in the control surface department assembling a section of the leading edge for the horizontal stabilizer of a plane (LOC)

Should she really be holding the chuck? Or does the drill not have a chuck?
  • Cajun Metal said:
not if it's rotating, I'm sure. She's probably just aligning the bit with the surface

All of the photos of the women are so staged. Looking pretty rather than actually working. Regulations must've dictated their hair was up and out of the way of the machinery and you wouldn't waste expensive red lipstick just to go to work or be wearing blusher. So patronising and of course unfair, as they were paid half of what the male workers were paid.

Oyida Peaks riveting as part of her NYA training to become a mechanic at the Naval Air Base, in the Assembly and Repair Department, Corpus Christi, Texas (LOC)

Aircraft is a Curtiss SNC-1. Is it possible the title is a misprint? Could the first name be "Ovida" rather than "Oyida"? Never heard of the latter - but maybe I don't get around much ;-)

Interesting. The clothing is actual work clothes for this shot - except the shoes.
