This photograph must date between 1900 when he was made a KCB (see star and neck badge) and 1910 when he was made a GCB. In fact it probably can be narrowed further, he was on secondment to the Japanese army during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05) which is presumably when he was given the Japanese Order of the Sacred Treasure 1st Class (sash and breast star).
