The additional information on the CWGC site is that he was "Son of Bowler George and E. H. Mason, of "Uplands," Hill Lane, Burgh Heath, Surrey." www.cwgc.org/search-for-war-dead/casualty/805271/MASON,%2... On the 1901 census the 11 year old William J, born Newington, London, was recorded at 70 Doddington Grove, London. This was the household of his parents, Bowler G, (aged 35 and a Clerk to the Board of Education, from Southwark, London) and Eliza H. (aged 35 and from Southwark, London). Their other children living with them are:- George B..........aged 5.........born Newington Ruth G............aged 9.........born Newington However, also in the household are Bowlers spinster sister, Ruth, (aged 31 and a School Teacher from Southwark) and widowed mother, Susannah, (aged 67 and from Mile End, London) as well as his widowed mother-in-law, Mary Pooley, (aged 61 and from Bermondsey, London) and sisters-in-law, Jane, (aged 24, born Bermondsey, working as a Forewoman Bookfolders) and Lily, (aged 15, born Bermondsey and a Typewritery and Shorthand Clerk). The family are included on this family ancestry page. darkfyre.bigpondhosting.com/jamesbarrett.html. It includes that Bowler George Mason married an Eliza Haigen Pooley in the Parish of St Saviours in Lodon in 1888. Bowler would eventually die in 1944. The other son is shown as George Bowler Mason, who married in 1917 and lived until 1972. The 8th Glosters were involved in a failed attack on the Switch Line at Bazentin Le Petit on this day that left them with 230 casualties.

Well I know his fellow solders produced a pamphlet about him which I think my brother has. His loss was felt down the generations. We should know all his children, had he lived! I would have known him well. We are all in education so that would have been a strong connection. I have a post card form him from the front. Picture of a german saying"my gotta the Glosters are coming!. And his hand saying. 'Tis ourselves who do it!' . Love Will. That is his last message. What a waste. Britain lost it best and brightest -leaving the idiots in charge.
