Cunnamulla is located 787 km west of Brisbane via Toowoomba and St George. It is 120 km north of the New South Wales border and 188 m above sea-level. The word 'Cunnamulla' is widely accepted to be an Aboriginal term, probably from the Kunja language, meaning either 'big waterhole' or 'long stretch of water'. The town was named by Cobb & Co when they established a base at the local waterhole. Post Office Located on Stockyard Street, the Post Office was built in 1890 on the site where Cobb & Co used to maintain their stock. Cairns Post Office Erected in 1937 was Cairns fourth post office and the third on this site (the first in 1886 and the second in 1907). It has a restrained Art Deco Style which was popular with government architects in the 1930s. It is a masonry building with a terracotta tiled roof The building has now been renovated and adapted inside for business purposes. Earliest date: ca: May/June 1892...ornamental lamps in Martin Place on footpath outside GPO in place... Latest date: 1898...no sign of the 1898-99 GPO additions... In this pic we see the six ornamental lamps that were erected in Martin Place on the footpath outside the GPO in ca May/June 1892...if you zoom in at the purl, you can see that these original lamps had 5 lights...a top light and 4 lower lights. At some point (I haven't discovered when, but I think it was in the 1890s) the ornamental ironwork around the top light was altered...after this alteration the lamps appear to have been mainly used as 1 light lamps, with the large top light only in place...and the 4 lower lights removed ...though just to complicate things, one pic I've seen shows the ornamental ironwork around the top light altered, and all 5 lights in place...but they're all small bulbs... trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/236176437 - the Daily Telegraph, 1st June, 1892...item on the erection of the lamps...
