Post Office building and clock tower, Dalby, ca. 1935

Dalby is the center of Australia's richest grain and cotton growing area. Dalby was founded in the early 1840s at a place known locally as "The Crossing" on Myall Creek, a tributary of the Condamine River. The first settler was Henry Dennis, who explored the region and chose land for himself and others in the locality. The name of the town is believed to come from the village of Dalby on the Isle of Man and reflects immigration from the Isle of Man in the mid-19th century.[13] The name was apparently chosen by Captain Samuel Perry when he surveyed the settlement in 1853. Myall Creek Post Office also opened in 1854 in Roche's store, with Mr Simpson as the first postmaster. It was renamed Dalby in 1855.[14][16] In 1859, Dalby became part of the new Colony of Queensland. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalby,_Queensland

Goondoon Street is thought to be of Aboriginal origin meaning "waterbag". It was first named Goondoon in the original survey carried out by MacCobe in 1853. Many significant houses and buildings are in Goondoon street. * 79 Goondoon street - The Grand Hotel was built in 1898 by Faircloth of Bundaberg. * 98 Goondoon Street - In 1919 Colin Patrick purchased a Jeweller shop. * 4 Goondoon Street - Originally a private home, the house was converted into the Metropolitan Hotel in 1865. * 7 Goondoon Street - One of Gladstone's oldest buildings, part of the former Returned and Services Lauge (RSL) Clubhouse was originally the first Gladstone Town Hall. The foundation stone was laid on 28 November 1868. * 33 Goondoon Street - The town's first Post Office was officially gazetted on 1 July 1954.
