This is definitely NOT a 110m race, since no such race was ever contested at an Olympics without hurdles. Running in lanes through a curve suggests either a 200m or 400m, but this is most likely the 400m. The background is where the present day finish line is (and I believe where it was in 1912 as well), and the relatively even stagger among the runners again suggests that this just after the start of the 400. There are five runners in the field. Assuming that this is the final, that also points to the 400 since there were five runners in the 400m final, and six in the 200m. From the results of the 400m final, the runners, from right (lane 1) to left (lane 5): 1. Ted Meredith (USA) 2. Hanns Braun (GER) 3. Charles Reidpath (USA) 4. Carroll Haff (USA) 5. Edward Lindberg (USA) The uniforms that are clearly visible match that lineup. Edited to add source: bottom of page 64, Olympic Track & Field statistics book, published by IAAF (International governing body for T&F). Lanes are in parentheses next to order of finish. www.iaaf.org/mm/document/competitions/competition/p1-181_... -- Seen on your photo stream. (?)

Note that the handwritten caption on the photo says "Crown Prince Sweden," not "Seden."

The Crown Prince in the photo must be Gustav VI Adolf, who was King of Sweden from 1950 to 1973. He was born in 1882, and had close ties to England, having been married in 1905 to Princess Margaret of Connaught, a Granddaughter of Queen Victoria.

Here is a photo of Gustav VI Adolf and family taken in 1912. Looks like a plausible match. Surely that is some other Swedish dignitary on the right--he seems very formally dressed. An Uncle, perhaps? Seems like this visit (if it is in the US) should show up in the New York Times. I did a quick search, but did not see it.

The caption mentions English football players, so I'd surmise this photo was taken in England. A number of other photos in the Bain collection were taken in England.
