Prince William - Crown Prince, King Sweden at Olympic games (LOC)

  • Richard Norton said:
That would be Prince Vilhelm, Duke of Södermanland of course. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Vilhelm,_Duke_of_S%c3%b6derm...
  • Margareta Sarring said:
The three men in comfortable armchairs are prince Wilhelm with a white hat, his brother the crown prince Gustav, who was king of Sweden (Gustav VI Adolf) from 1950 to his death in 1973 and their father, who was king (Gustav V) at the time for the photo until he died in 1950. All from the family Bernadotte, one of Napleon's marshals that was invited to become king in Sweden in 1818. The crown prince had died, and measures were taken to save the monarchy.

Note that the handwritten caption on the photo says "Crown Prince Sweden," not "Seden."

The Crown Prince in the photo must be Gustav VI Adolf, who was King of Sweden from 1950 to 1973. He was born in 1882, and had close ties to England, having been married in 1905 to Princess Margaret of Connaught, a Granddaughter of Queen Victoria.

Here is a photo of Gustav VI Adolf and family taken in 1912. Looks like a plausible match. Surely that is some other Swedish dignitary on the right--he seems very formally dressed. An Uncle, perhaps? Seems like this visit (if it is in the US) should show up in the New York Times. I did a quick search, but did not see it.

The caption mentions English football players, so I'd surmise this photo was taken in England. A number of other photos in the Bain collection were taken in England.

Thanks for catching the misspelling and providing additional information. We'll update the source data and reload the description in Flickr.
