Boxer, Adrian Holmes, knocks an opponent to the mat in the London Olympics, 1948

Adrian's Story 1925 – 2014 A farmer from Theodore, Queensland, Adrian Holmes was a late inclusion in the boxing team to London in 1948. His supporters had raised the £550 needed for his inclusion. At London in the light-heavyweight division, he achieved much more than all of his more highly ranked fellow boxers, finishing fourth. At any Olympic Games after London, as a losing semi-finalist, he would have been a bronze medallist. He was leading in the bronze medal match when seconds before the end of the contest, which he was leading on points, he fell and injured his ankle and seemingly couldn't continue, necessitating the referee to end stop the fight. Making a tackle in a game of Rugby, Brisbane

The black Jersey with the silver fern emblem are of the All Blacks New Zealand rugby union team. The site saintsandheathens.wordpress.com/wallabies-rugby-jerseys/w... says that the Australian rugby union team (Wallabies) jersey for 1938 was 'gold with a green centre band' for a match against New Zealand. It does not list this jersey colours used for any other year. Matches between Australia and New Zealand were played in 1938 as follows 13 August 1938Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney 6 August 1938Exhibition Ground, Brisbane 23 July 1938Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney This photo is likely to be of one of these matches. The Houses in the background look to be typical of Queensland architecture of the time - elevated timber buildings. I therefore suggest that this is a photo of Australia v New Zealand dated 6th August 1938 at the exhibition grounds Brisbane.

Fantastic detective work Peter McCombe ! Thanks for sharing this info. We would have to agree with you on all accounts. It's likely the game is in Brisbane as George Jackman was a photographer for the Brisbane newspapers The Courier Mail and The Daily Mail from 1920 -1945.
