From this article For their impact on the character of trade unionism, the most important state interventions were those on the railway and in agriculture. Under severe rank and file pressure, the London-based National Union of Railwaymen (NUR) sanctioned a national strike in Ireland in December 1916. As private interests would not meet the pay demand, the government stepped in to keep the war effort running smoothly, took control of Ireland's thirty two railway companies, and awarded a substantial war bonus. Over the next nine months the NUR's Irish affiliation rocketed from 5,000 to 17,000 members. It was a victory for the rank and file over the union’s London executive, as well as for the union over the railway companies. In 1917 NUR men launched the monthly journal New Way and developed the most articulate rank and file movement in Ireland during these years. The same article mentions James 'Big Jim' Larkin (and his hat and droopy moustache), but according to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Larkin he was in the USA between 1914 and 1923.

Frederick Wigan Jones, who had attended Stechford Council School in Birmingham, originally enlisted on the outbreak of war as a Private soldier, Regimental Number 2648, in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He was subsequently commissioned on 16th November 1915 [London Gazette 29377 dated 23rd November 1915 shows his Commission as Second Lieutenant] and attained rank of Lieutenant in 8th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment on 10th October 1916. He initially arrived in France on 22/3/1915, possibly serving in 3rd Battalion Royal Warwicks. Lt Jones was wounded on 25th November 1916 and he Died of Wounds in hospital after evacuation to England on 21th December 1916 His medals were claimed by W. F. Jones, as next his of kin, 27/06/1921. According to CWGC website he was the son of William Thomas and Fanny Maria Jones, of "Sandown," 270, Station Rd., Stechford, Birmingham. Born circa 1892 according to the 1911 census. He was the only child. Aged 19 and described as an Art Student. Born in Birmingham.
