From Wikipedia: In 1888-9, tenants of the local landlord, Arthur Smith Barry, withheld their rents in solidarity with his tenants in Co Cork. They were evicted and, under the direction of Fr. David Humphreys[8][9] and William O'Brien, decided to build a new town on land outside his control. The area now known Dillon Street and Emmet Street in Tipperary town was the centre of this development and was built by local labour but with funds raised in Australia and the United States. The high point was 12 April 1890, when a row of shops called the William O'Brien Arcade was opened, providing shops for some of the business people who had been evicted from the centre of the town. Eventually, compromise was reached and the tenants returned to the 'Old Tipperary'

Presumably the William O'Brien Arcade is the row of shops at the end. I'd guess from the road-laying activities on that this would be about 1890.

There's a Patrick O'Neill, Tailor, in Emmet Street in 1911. I don't see anything like this building there though.

On the lozenge shaped posters there is mention of "O'Neills, William O'Brien Street, Tipperary"????? I love this shot, a great selection of items on display on what appears to be a wet day with no regard for the damp on the cotton and wool products! The bustle on the lady in the poster might give a clue as to the date?

If it's advertising O'Brien Street, then this is presumably elsewhere. Maybe it's one of the buildings in the Marketplace.

If this building was also known as the "Irish House" in Tipperary (as the signs suggest), then it appears to have been destroyed by British Forces in the War of Independence in reprisal for an ambush at Lisnagaul in Nov 1920. Compensation for the loss was later discussed in the Dáil in 1925: href="http://oireachtasdebates.oireachtas.ie/debates%20authoring/debateswebpack.nsf/takes/dail1925061800007"rel="nofollow">oireachtasdebates.oireachtas.ie/debates%20authoring/debat... EDIT: Since B-59 has found images of the 'old' Irish House and the 'new' Irish House in the Pall Mall Gazette (see below), we can now suggest that it was the three-storey Irish House on Main Street that was destroyed in November 1920, not the building in the image above.

We know that Michael Cross and Patrick Cleary ended up in New Tipperary. I wonder about the others.

There's a Boot man in the arcade, nearest shop on the right hand side of the other shot, I can't read the poster in the window, though. Royal Boots? Boland Boots?
