Madam, - In the Lawrence Collection there is a photograph of the Channel Squadron of the Royal Navy at anchor in Killary Harbour in the West of Ireland. I have researched this considerably and have concluded that it was on the morning of Sunday, October 8th 1899. I have examined the logs of some of the ships present and would like to explore the position a little more. Majestic, Magnificent, Hannibal, Ropulso, Jupiter, Mars, Diadem, Furious, Pactolus and 3 others which are unreadable from Irish times 10/10/1899 stating the fleet left The Killeries yesterday. Unreadable could be - Resolut(xxx), Amgant or Imgant, Nighe all three open to correction.

The same image was published in the 'Irish Citizen' on 19 July 1913, so probably taken shortly before (?)

A very nice Dog, a Labrador? I am not sure, then many breeds looked a lot different over 100 years ago. One thing for sure it does look a menace!

beachcomber australia Far be it from me to contradict History Ireland, but I think material in our Sheehy Skeffington collections all end around 1940. So not sure about 1950s. Always happy however to sit corrected if any evidence emerges...

National Library of Ireland on The Commons Yes, I also think she looks younger is today's photo than the Wikipedia one, which says "circa 1940s". And the hat and coat look circa 1920s -ish, maybe, possibly.

What is written on the reverse, "Ewes" ? It could be the name of the dog.
