    From Wikipedia: The second USS Astoria (CA-34) was a United States Navy New Orleans-class heavy cruiser that participated in both the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway, but was then sunk in August 1942 at the Battle of Savo Island. She visited Australia in the summer of 1934 (Northern hemisphere summer), but I have no idea if this is an image of that visit or a later one.

    Appears to be an army officer and definitely not US - the Commonwealth navies salute in a similar fashion to the Americans - not palm forward. Possibly an army Lieutenant-Colonel - looks to be a crown with single pip on his shoulder boards.

    KenjiB_48 Jeremy Davis Hi all, thanks for all your clues, after a bit of research we have identified the man as Lieutenant-Colonel Percy Muir McFarlane who was acting Base Commandant at Victoria Barracks in Paddington, Sydney at the time. See articles here and here for more info. It seems McFarlane had quite a distinguished military career, serving in the Boer War and both World Wars!
