The well-dressed gentleman at the helm (why, when the boat is tied up?! - and he is also in the other photos) is very likely to be Frederick Eccleston Du Faur (1832-1915) who was the mover and shaker behind Kuring-gai Chase, amongst many other varied achievements in his life - adb.anu.edu.au/biography/du-faur-frederick-eccleston-3448 . Aged 67 in 1899.

THE GENESIS OF THE CHASE

The Chase primarily owes its existence to the pre-eminent managing trustee, Mr. E. Du Faur. He became impressed with the beauties and possibilities of the country during 1892, and in October of that year recommended its reservation to Mr. H. Copeland, then Minister for Lands. Nearly a year later Mr Copeland was able to visit the place, and was so pleased that he took up the matter con amore, and in June, 1894, the reserves were gazetted. At first it was proposed to call it the "North Sydney Water Park," in view of the splendid series of waterways; but Mr Copeland hit upon the present title, a generic term for the aboriginal tribes who were once numerous along the shores of both Cowan and Pittwater.

When the trust was constituted Mr Du Faur was made managing trustee, and from that day to this he has personally supervised everything connected with the development of the Chase. He has been engineer, roadmaker, explorer, mapmaker, surveyor, and a thousand and one other things, all for the love he bears his iuuUinü[boating?], and which but for his honorary service would have cost the trust a considerable share of its meagre funds - funds that in these happy circumstances have been freed for actual works. The works done are varied. They include a road from Turramurra to Bobbin Head, which is now nearly down to the water after finishing its course by a drop of 680ft in 50 chains. There are horse paddocks for visitors, with water laid on from gully dams; picturesque tracks from Wahroonga, Hornsby, Colah, and Berowra, down to the waters of Cowan at either Shaw's boatsheds below Bobbin Head or Windybank's boatsheds below Berowra; long shore tracks; a driving road from Colah; a dam with waterpipes to a stone wharf in Kuringgai Bay, where rests the the official houseboat, and alongside which ocean steamers have come for water; a stone causeway in Lovett's Bay on the Pittwater side, with a track from it to the top of Flagstaff Hill, whence one of the most beautiful panoramic views in Australia is opened out; and the neat and serviceable houseboat itself , and ever so many other things, all tending to the opening up of the place and the convenience of visitors have been evolved under the personal direction and supervision of the managing trustee.
