What is the animal in the picture on the front row?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olive_Rush

Epilsk - It's a lap dog. The cameras at the time required long exposures - people needed to sit still while the shot was taken. The dog clearly couldn't :)

wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! can you imagine what these people would have thought if they had been told that in a hundred years time the whole world would see the picture, thanks to tecnology. At the time they were just inventing the light! In 1877 electric lights were only used by a few people! ... they would have certainly asked: what is technology??

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called School group portrait, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

It's not an unidentified photographer. The credit in the lower left says "Pirie MacDonald, Photographer of Men". Also see this similar photo in the Library of Congress collection.

Thanks for the comment! You're correct, it looks like Pirie MacDonald is the photographer. I'm confirming it with the Archives of American Art and will update it once I hear from them. Cheers, Effie, Smithsonian Institution Archives
