The history of the Buick brand is almost a statement of the history of the American automobile industry. Founder David Buick had to hang on tight in the early days as Buick rode the unpredictable roller-coaster of world events to become not only a pioneer but a frontrunner in automotive manufacturing. Buick, fortunately, attracted the aid of William Durant. Durant was the largest producer of horse-drawn carriages in the country and had several successful businesses. In 1904, he agreed to turn Buick into a viable company. Durant went to the New York Auto Show in 1905. He took orders for more than one thousand Buicks. With these orders in hand, he raised enough money from Flint’s banks to build the country’s largest assembly facility. By 1906, Buick was building 4,600 automobiles a year. 1907 saw Henry Ford introduce his famous Model T. Buick countered Ford’s success with the Model 10. Buick produced 4,000 Model 10 runabouts in 1908, outselling both Ford and Cadillac, making Buick the number one producer of automobiles that year. Together with Louis Chevrolet, Durant formed the ‘Chevrolet Company’ in 1911. It soon outsold GM and challenged Ford. From its very beginnings, the Buick has impacted the whole automobile industry. Is it possible that the caravan belonged to Elizabeth Webb Nicholls (21 February 1850 – 3 August 1943)who was a key suffragist in the campaign for votes for women (also called 'suffrage') in South Australia during the 1890s? She took on several high-profile roles in the capital of South Australia, Adelaide, and was President of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) of South Australia, one of the most prominent organisations in the successful campaigns which made South Australia the first of the Australian colonies to grant women the right to vote in 1894. Golden Age Of Caravans - Vintage Caravans The 1920s & 30s saw the real birth of caravanning for the middle classes. Families had the time and the money (and the car) to take a caravanning holiday. Mostly, people would just set up camp wherever they pleased, but many official caravan sites also popped up during this time. During WW2 however, many caravan manufacturers collapsed. Even in the years following, petrol rations and nation rebuilding pushed caravan holidays to the back of most Australians’ minds. From the beginning of the 1950s however, caravans began their resurgence and with affordable family cars like the FJ Holden, Australia rekindled its love of caravanning. While America was saying hello to the streamlined aircraft aluminum-built Airstream, Australians were cruising around in their Pathfinders and tiny Teardrops. Many caravans from the 1950s-1970s are still around today, lovingly restored by vintage caravan enthusiasts. The rest have been gutted and painted baby blue by hipster coffee and doughnut vendors (nothing wrong with that in my opinion, as long as the doughnuts are delicious).
