The Prince of Wales, in the sailor cap, is of course the future Edward VIII. He later abdicated and married Wallis Simpson. Probably the youngster peeping out behind his mother is the future George V, the present Queen's father. The Festival of Empire was a huge trade fair, as can bee seen by the size of the buildings on the skyline of this picture. It was held at the relocated Crystal Palace which eventually burned down in 1936, The first trade fair in 1851 had been a huge success. Edit: Oops I meant George Vi (blush)

The youngster peeping out isn't George V (who isn't the present Queen's father, that was George VI); George V is the King present at the fair. The one behind Queen Mary is Princess Mary, the future Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood.

The festival opened May 12, 1911 the prince would have been 1 month from turning 17.

23rd June 1911 it says. George V and May of Teck were crowned on the 22nd June. This'll be their coronation parade. I think the photographer has just got the date a bit wrong:-)

The left-hand building has 5 Lombard Street on a sign and is an ABC Aerated Bread Company tea-room en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerated_Bread_Company The building next to it has office space to rent in January 2008 www.landmarkplc.com/lombard/Lombard_1.html This is close to the Bank tube station in the City of London.

Notice that the carriage horses are controlled by postilions, not a coachman.

Mary of Teck: "Mary of Teck (Victoria Mary Augusta Louise Olga Pauline Claudine Agnes; 26 May 1867 – 24 March 1953) was Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Empress consort of India, as the wife of King-Emperor George V." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_of_Teck

George V and May of Teck. Crowned 22nd June 1911 at Westminster Abbey. So this is not the Coronation if it is at St George's Chapel, Windsor. It doesn't really look grand enough for a coronation. George V bears a striking resemblance to his first cousin, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia.

The robes are those of the Order of the Garter. Assuming that this was taken on the same day as www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2163490798/ it was on June 10, 1911, when the Prince of Wales (future Edward VIII) was invested with the Order of the Garter. According to query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9A00E6D71031E233A... this was seen as the beginning of the coronation celebrations.

This is definitely the Garter Ceremony, not the Coronation.

This does appear to be June 10, 1911, after the Prince of Wales (Edward VIII) was invested with the Order of the Garter in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. It was linked to the series of state functions leading up to George V's coronation on June 22, 1911 at Westminster Abbey. We will add more information to the descriptive data to make it clearer which event is being shown.
