Sir Clements Markham (LOC)

He was secretary of the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) between 1863 and 1888,[1] and later served as the Society's president for a further 12 years. In the latter capacity he was mainly responsible for organising the National Antarctic Expedition of 1901–04, and for launching the polar career of Robert Falcon Scott."     Enrico Caruso (1873-1921), the world-renowned Italian tenor (including more than 800 appearances at the New York Met), was in the audience when seventeen year-old Stella Carol made her singing debut at Colston Hall in Bristol in the West of England.

    After her debut, Signor Caruso predicted a "brilliant future" for her.

    There were several variants of this pose that were printed on postcards to promote Stella Carol. Many of the postcards were captioned "A new fairy tale in real life".
