Michael Collins.

By a combination of circumstances I (with no known Irish connections) have my middle name Michael because of this man. Sort of.

My father was born in 1922, and my grandmother really really liked the name Michael. But of course the one Michael in all the papers at the time was General Collins. I doubt very much whether Grannie Spooner was following the goings-on in Ireland at the time, but although she liked the name, she probably didn't want a name so closely associated with whatever unpleasantness was happening, and so my father was named Philip.

Over three decades later I was born. I don't think my parents particularly wanted the name Micheal, but Grannie still really really liked it for some reason, and if her son couldn't be a Michael, then it would have to be her first grandson. She must have had some clout in the family, because as a compromise I ended up as John Michael.

Personally I don't like the name much, and never use it. My siblings occasionally make muttered accusations of favouritism and privilege because they have no middle names.

And all because of Michael Collins being in the news in 1922.

John Spooner Nice story John Michael! I always thought of Michael as being the name of the first policeman who was ordered by the Lord to throw Lucifer and his minions out of heaven! Mine was an anti-Free State household yet on our wall were a photograph of deValera and a painting of Michael Collins!
Looking at the list that Sharon has provided the only name that jumps out at me was Dalton and I was wondering if that was Emmett Dalton?????

Wednesday 22 June 1932 according to - trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/16911642 - "... The church was tastefully decorated with festoons of foliage, and hanging baskets of hydrangeas between the pillars. ... "

Was this on Wednesday, 22 June 1932? The Irish Press reported in Thursday 23rd's paper about "cheering crowds" and "high-pitched enthusiasm" as the Papal Legate [Cardinal Lorenzo Lauri] and other church dignitaries drove and then processed to the Pro-Cathedral.

A mighty roar from three thousand throats signalled his arrival. Cardinal Lorenzo Lauri was evidently gratified by the warmth of the welcome. He smiled and blessed those who had greeted him. Accompanied by his suite he entered the Pro-Cathedral. A few minutes earlier a distinguished procession of the nine cardinals attending the Eucharistic Congress walked in single file to the Pro-Cathedral. Cardinal MacRory was at the rear... Catholic Boy Scouts, carrying their standard colours, and a company of Catholic Sea Scouts from the Port of Galway, the nucleus of the Free State Mercantile Marine, formed the guard of honour.

Unsurprisingly, Dev and Sean T. O'Kelly were there, and the ever popular Alfie Byrne, Lord Mayor of Dublin (the "Shaking Hand of Dublin"). I should be able to get an approximate time of days from one of the newspaper reports.

There's a Peter Farrell, job coach and undertaker establishment at 66 Marlborough Street (also 49-52 Corporation Street) in Thom's Directory, 1922.

Could this photo be taken from Upper Gloucester Street (now Sean McDermott Street) with Marlborough Street extending southwards behind the barricade and St Thomas's Church out of sight behind the railings and the disused graveyard out of sight behind the curving wall?
