HIGGINSON WINS AT AMATEUR SHOOTING; New York A.C. Gunner Captures National Championship at Travers Island. April 5, 1912 B.M. Higginson, Jr., a former Harvard gunner, wearing the colors of the New York A.C., won the seventh annual National championship at clay birds over the Travers Island traps of the New York A.C. yesterday. The winner made the wonderful score of 185 out of a possible 200 targets, breaking the previous record, held by former Champion H.W. Kahler, by 12 targets.

"An employee in the agricultural division of Du Pont, Hammond had suggested that the company offer shooting classes especially for women as part of its gun club. The classes went so well that a trapshooting club for women was established. An adjunct of the Du Pont Trapshooting Club, the women's group was allowed to use the traps one afternoon a week, since 'it was not feasible to give up one of [the main club's] traps to women on regular shooting days.'"
