Rio Piedras is a town in Puerto Rico. Again not sure why the question mark after the town. Could it be that LOC is not sure it was taken there?

rigglord, Glad you're enjoying the photos! Because the title does not appear in brackets, it is transcribed from an original source. Generally, a title is transcribed from the original picture, or from a photographer's logbook or negative jacket. If the picture carries no caption a title is devised from another source and displayed in brackets. Devised titles are written by Library staff, or they might come from a published book illustration or a former owner.

And this one was used for the cover of "Tortilla Flat" by John Steinbeck, Penguin Modern Classics edition.

I doubt any on this image reached sixth grade, it was a back breaking work. interesting how the "mulatos", or Hispanic whites where only allow to work with a machete on the field, I guess it was a higher paying job, but rather no allow to any African or dark skin individual.

Not true.If you went more to the center of the island youwould have seen more black folks with machetes. Puerto Rican families consist at that time of maybe 9 to 17 kids.Maybe 2 went to school & college the rest were needed for the fields to work. there blacks, whites & browns worked together. They were rought times. everyone was needed for the fields.

I don't like you José you go around amazing imagery for profit purposes. Is sort sad you will come out witch such a prestige name and have that twisted by standards. You are not a nationalized entity so you are falsely representing. I don’t really care who you are but at least form a nonprofit and use the imagery accordingly for conservation and historic purposes.
