August 1914 www.greatwardifferent.com/Great_War/Atrocity/De_Gerlache_... one of the Belgian towns terrorized by the Germans to break the civilian moral in an effort to enable German troops to advance on France. An early example of failing to win the hearts and minds of the population, the German military staff was mystified why it failed. If a civilian attacked a German soldier, the town would face severe reprisal. If it happened between 2 town, both towns suffered. A true campaign of terror.
