The date of build is written on the building, so it can't be as early as 1895.

InTheMist Thank you for your interest! You're right, this particular station was built in 1906, and it is clearly labeled on the station. However, Flickr will not let us put a date-range of several years in the actual photographic information for the photograph, only a circa date for a single year. Because of this limitation, we typically put a circa date with the first year of the date-range we believe the series of photographs were taken, and insert the full date information in the notation for the photograph. This series of photographs were taken between 1895 and 1910. Without any additional information, we cannot pin down a specific year for this photograph, however I will contact the curator who is familiar with this collection item and pass along your observation to them. As a result, we might be able to nail down the date-range with a bit more certainty. Using the 'Pioneer' name on the side of the locomotive, I found this... along with photos similar to this photo. "The Pioneer Mill Company in Lahaina, had a 30 inch gauge railroad to bring the sugar cane to the processing mill. It ran from 1882 until 1952 when trucks took over for the locomotives.... The big engine named “Launiupoko”’ was an 0-4-2T saddle tank loco with an added 4 wheel tender for fuel and additional water capacity. Built by Baldwin in 1900, she was their construction number 18380, and was an oil burner... Besides engine No.3... a smaller 0-4-2T wood burning saddle tank loco, No.1 “Lahaina”. While No.3 was a black with white stripes and lettering, No.1, a Baldwin of the 1880’s, had fancy domes... She carried a large oil burning headlight..." Apparently both locomotives were later purchased - restored - moved to southern California. Sadly, both were so heavily damaged in a wildland fire that the owner felt restoration impossible. Unknown fate. In this video, two locomotives were brought back to Maui and restored, and are operational; I can't confirm which locomotives they are. youtu.be/En-OyZZQWG8.
