My father's uncle, Adolphe Chapleau, was the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec in the late 1800s. My family has many pieces of silver tableware from the Chapleaus, and assorted pieces given to them ... one of the pieces is a gift from the countess and her husband. It's a pen and ink well set on a tray and is really beautifully made.

She sailed to America from Queenstown [now Cobh] Ireland in December 1912, on the Celtic, which also carried Miss Violet Asquith, the daughter of British Prime Minister Herbert H. Asquith, for a visit to Washington, D. C. as a guest of the British Ambassador, Lord Bryce, and Mrs. Bryce. In 1912, the Countess of Aberdeen's husband was serving as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. I think this may be a wife from the Loew Theater family.

Possibly Mrs William Goadby Loew, or E. Victor Loew - society leaders of New York? Their wives are mentioned in New York Times articles of that era as hostess of balls, events - with the likes of Mrs Cornelius Vanderbilt, Mrs Alfred G. Vanderbilt, Mrs Stuyvesent Fish all part of the Newport Circle. She would have attended balls and dinners at Crossways, the Breakers, Beaulieu all famous mansions of New York Society of the Gilded Age.

The name "Mrs. W. G. Loew" is actually inscribed on the negative. The Bain collection has other photos of her in which she is identified in full as Mrs. William Goadby Loew.
