Bolivar Ferry, Galveston, Texas

    The "L. P. Featherstone" was a rail barge with 3-tracks and a capacity of 18 railcars, built in 1908 for the Gulf & Inter-State Railway. The G&I's track extended from Beaumont to Pt. Bolivar, from whence its trains were ferried 3 miles across Galveston Bay to the same-named island. The barge's namesake was Lewis Porter Featherstone, one of the contractors who had helped build the G&I, later owned it, and was instrumental in helping Galveston overcome the aftermath of the Great Hurricane of 1900. The G&I also owned one tugboat, the "J. W. Terry," which might be the tug shown here; does anyone know? What is likely an older G&I rail barge appears in this collection at www.flickr.com/photos/smu_cul_digitalcollections/6501436499 .

Harbor Island Causeway, Aransas Pass, Texas

    I remember this causeway in the early fifties, it was built over an old railroad bed. It was only wide enough for one lane with turnouts every so often to pass traffic coming the other way. Would never handle today's traffic.
