  The air seems more polluted than today. The downside of concentrations of coal-fired furnaces and steam boilers and locomotives.

  I think those are railway sheds if anything. It was a popular view - Henry King (c.1888?) - Arthur Phillips (c.1895?) Charles Kerry (c.1900?) Guessing Mr Hall's photo at about 1910?

  Wait a minute - the railway opened in 1893 and I think they are building it here. The large size shows what looks to be stacks of rails. So 1892? That makes more sense with the square riggers in the background. Andy Brill It looks like a westerly wind, so all the smoke and filth from Balmain area is blowing towards the north shore.

  Andy Brill beachcomber australia 1892 seems like a better date, though we will forward this photograph to a ferry expert for some advice about the ferries. Presuming you saw Catherine Warne's Pictorial History: Lower North Shore pp 67-71? Interesting!

  Ha - the plot thickens - I think this is slightly earlier than the other, c.1890, due to the state of the Australia Hotel. Hall seems to have used a different, less fish-eye lens. Fascinating to compare them -
