The air seems more polluted than today. The downside of concentrations of coal-fired furnaces and steam boilers and locomotives.

I think those are railway sheds if anything. It was a popular view - Henry King (c.1888?) - Arthur Phillips (c.1895?) Charles Kerry (c.1900?) Guessing Mr Hall's photo at about 1910?

Wait a minute - the railway opened in 1893 and I think they are building it here. The large size shows what looks to be stacks of rails. So 1892? That makes more sense with the square riggers in the background. Andy Brill It looks like a westerly wind, so all the smoke and filth from Balmain area is blowing towards the north shore.

The Graeme Andrews 'Ferries of Sydney' book makes no mention of one actually called "Sydney". I am presuming she was a ferry - double ended, bench seats upstairs, etc, like the inner harbour ferries 'Lady' class (p.92 of the book). There are two (Sydney I and II) listed on the FerriesOfSydney website but no details - ferriesofsydney.com/ferries.html (glad to see this excellent site back online again - it was MIA for couple of years)
