"While trying to assemble a list of names & dates of Cordial Manufacturers in Maryborough, we seem to have uncovered yet another "Maryborough Myth". The History of Maryborough, editions 1976 & 1996, state that J.R.Mansfield established the first Cordial Factory in Maryborough in 1859. However, Mansfield's name was Samuel, born about 1841 in Essex, arrived in Melbourne in 1862 & worked in the gold fields in Victoria, before coming to Gympie in 1867 for the gold rush there. The "Chronicle" reported on 2 Sept 1869 that he had taken over the factory of his brother-in-law George Sutton. The Mansfield family remained in business for 3 generations, & were still operating in the 1970s. Can anyone tell us the exact date they closed? Any information & photos on any of the Cordial makers would be appreciated. So far we have 20 different firms, & there could be more." Bundaberg Rum, colloquially known as Bundy, is a dark rum produced in Bundaberg East, Queensland, Australia, by the Bundaberg Distilling Company. In 2010, the Bundaberg Distilling Company was inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame. Bundaberg Rum originated because the local sugar mills had a problem with what to do with the waste molasses after the sugar was extracted. Molasses was heavy and difficult to transport, and the costs of converting it to stock feed were rarely worth the effort. Sugar men first began to think of the profits that could be made from distilling. The Bundaberg Distilling Company began its operations in 1888, and Bundaberg rum was first produced in 1889. Production ceased from 1907 to 1914, and from 1936 to 1939, after fires, the second of which caused rum from the factory to spill into the nearby Burnett River.
