I can't tie this picture to a particular news event, but the 6/27/04 date written on the negative was shortly after the 1904 running of the Gordon Bennett Cup automobile race in Europe and provoked discussion about the lack of entries of American cars. In October 1904, the first international automobile race was held on Long Island roads, the Vanderbilt Cup.
