The "Leo" nickname was evidently a nom de plume when he had his first work published aged 16, according to this Trove 1890 article, which has a few other gems. He died aged 23 in 1870 and 50,000 people attended his funeral - trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/164858030 -

We've seen a lot of airbrushed photos where the subject turns out to be 10 years older than they look. He could be anything from 18 to over 30. He doesn't seem to match any of the descriptions of children killed in Dublin during the rising, hence the 18 limit. He has quite a high forehead, so if you imagine a few wrinkles, late 20s or early 30s may not be so fanciful.
