On the occasion of the convent's Golden jubilee in 1933, the report of the celebrations in the Waterford Standard included this:
CONVENT. Originally built in the last century as residence for one of the Malcomson Brothers, the proprietors of the one-time famous Portlaw Woollen Mills, the present convent remained in their possession until 1883, when, following the death of Rev. J. McGrath, P.P., who bequeathed his entire property to charity, particularly towards the foundation of the convent for the instruction of the poor, negotiations were completed, and the premises were transferred to trustees. The House was formally constituted a foundation Most Rev. Dr. J. Power in 1885, and in 1910 the new school was built and equipped.
