From Thomas Whelan's wiki - His mother, Bridget, saw him before his execution, and waited outside with the praying crowd holding candles. She told a reporter that she had left her son "so happy and cheerful you would almost imagine he was going to see a football match".

Maybe someone better informed can add something, but I've always thought of Meyer as a cultural and academic figure rather than a political one. He was one of those German academics who did so much for Celtic studies in the late 19th & early 20th century.
