Wonderful, wonderful picture. I love it. GPO clock says 16:05 (five past four in the afternoon). Was this rush hour on Pyrmont Bridge, or just a jam caused by the swing bridge being opened recently to let a ship through? Probably the latter, as the traffic is thinner towards Market Street. The Shellbourne Hotel (see note on the right side) shows up on Google street view with a conveniently large sign saying it was built in 1902. This is sugar beets not coal.

This photo (and another similar view from a slightly different angle) was actually taken during the fall 1901 inaugural season of the Great Western Sugar Company refinery at Loveland, Colo. The buildings were still under construction when the photos were taken, but beets were already being stockpiled. The cars had just been purchased for sugar beet service by the Colorado & Southern Railway.
