There is also the number over the second part of the shot with the number 11-1/2. Just up the road in Dorset Street Upper near the junction with Blessington St was a shop number 123-1/2, I was always amused to see it and when development removed it I thought it a pity they did not retain it. I note that the headlines refer to a "Balkan War" but there did not appear to be a crisis in 1905 but there was one in 1908 and of course there was a little dispute in 1914 that led to a slightly larger dispute. "Bosnian Crisis 1908-09 Each succeeding international crisis from 1905 to 1913 threatened the security of all the powers and thus increased the hostility between the rival camps. If a war broke out in Europe, it would naturally become an international war involving all the powers.#"

Swordscookie Thanks, and no, we'd moved on to Rome by time of second quake! They are beautiful nibs, and you're right, the 11-1/2 is gorgeus, isn't it? Don't think we've come across that in any of our photos yet. I did try some of the headlines that I could make out in our online newspapers for dating purposes but couldn't find any exact matches...

A group of Redmondite volunteer Non Commissioned Officers in full regalia! I don't think I've seen anything like this before. All patriotic and well meaning and caught out by the Rising in 1916 and the decision of their leaders to support Britain in WW1 in the hope of gaining Home Rule by peaceful means. Many of them joined the war effort in Europe and lost their lives and many more changed over and took an active part in the war of independence. They are surprisingly well equipped with rifles, those are Lee-Enfield Mark II riflles the standard issue to the British Army at that time though they are sporting Boer War bandoliers.

You say "surprisingly well equipped". The rifles may have been up to date, but I wonder how many of those rifles the Volunteers had - not just those that would be displayed for PR reasons in a photo like this?

He died in 1885, so either the dates are wrong or this is a copy (although I think Poole copies are usually noted as such?)

Was Mr Poole making a copy of an earlier photo? James Delahunty died in 1885. And a 1872 Vanity Fair caricature - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Delahunty Delahunty "was laughed at because of the dullness of his oratory". In 1878 he caused amusement in the Commons by spreading on his bench sundry personal items taken from his bag in a long search for the notes for his speech on the Money Laws (Ireland) Bill. [Ed. SNAP !]

From snippets in various newspapers, James Delahunty was a member of the Irish Parliamentary Party; of the Home Rule League; on the council of the Society for the Preservation of the Irish Language; and active on the land question.
